One from the archives this morning and I have managed to find a suitable piece of music to accompany the words.
Originally written for a ‘tales of the unexpected’ prompt in a Poetry class I attended some 10 years ago. This is a darkly humorous (imho) ‘Unexpected Birthday Card’.
Each line is an American Sentence. The “American Sentence” is a 17-syllable sentence form of poetry, inspired by the Japanese haiku, invented by Allen Ginsberg. It consists of a single sentence (or phrase) with 17 syllables, unlike the haiku’s three-line structure of 5-7-5 syllables.

a nest of snakes for you as a bouquet to plant in your cracked disgust
a garland of dead weeds for the barren wasteland you dare call a heart
a string of fuck-me-nots to remind you of what will never happen
wrapped up with a bow made of gut string stretched to breaking point
birthday sentences. gifting you a prison made of dark skies and hell.

This made me laugh out loud in the best way
Well paired! I read first, and then I listened while reading a second time. Deliciously dark!
